More ancient discoveries concerning St Paul....

Bone found in Basilica of St Paul

Pope Benedict announced today that fragments of bone from the first or second century had been found in a tomb in the Basilica of St Paul in Rome.

"This seems to confirm the unanimous and undisputed tradition that these are the mortal remains on the Apostle Paul," the pontiff said at St Paul's-Outside-the-Walls, on the eve of the Feasts of St Peter and St Paul celebrated tomorrow.

Peter and Paul are revered by Christians as the greatest early missionaries. Converting on the road to Damascus following a blinding vision of Jesus, Paul took the Gospel to pagan Greeks and Romans and met his martyrdom in Rome in about AD 65.

Christian tradition had it that St Paul was buried together with St Peter in a catacomb on the Via Appia, before being moved to the basilica erected in his honour. For centuries it was believed that his remains were buried beneath the altar.

But it was not until a stone sarcophagus was discovered there in 2006 that Vatican archaeologists could apply scientific research to the religious tradition.

The first results come during the "Pauline Year", when the Roman Catholic church has been celebrating the second millennium of the birth of the "Apostle of the Gentiles".

Pope Benedict gave details of the discovery, saying a tiny hole had been drilled in the sarcophagus to permit inspection of the interior, revealing "traces of a precious linen cloth, purple in colour, laminated with pure gold, and a blue coloured textile with filaments of linen".

"It also revealed the presence of grains of red incense and traces of protein and limestone. There were also tiny fragments of bone, which, when subjected to Carbon 14 tests by experts, turned out to belong to someone who lived in the first or second century," said the Pope.

The discovery of the bone fragments coincided with news that Vatican archaeologists had discovered what they believe is the oldest image in existence of St Paul, dating from the late 4th century, on the walls of catacomb beneath Rome.

Vatican newspaper Osservatore Romano , revealing the find today, published a picture of a frescoed image of the face of a man with a pointed black beard on a red background, inside a bright yellow halo. The high forehead is furrowed.

Experts of the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology made the discovery on June 19 in the Catacomb of Santa Tecla in Rome and described it as the "oldest icon in history dedicated to the cult of the Apostle", according to the Vatican newspaper.

Early Christians in Rome buried their dead in catacombs dug into the soft rock under the city and decorated the underground walls with devotional images, often in the Pompeian style.

Evangelical and Anglo-Catholic Initiative....

Anglo-Catholic and Evangelical Bishops back UK launch of Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans (UK and Ireland)

Issued by the Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans (UK)
http://www.anglican-mainstream.net/
June 27th, 2009

FIVE English Bishops are to take part in the launch of the Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans in London on July 6, expressing the breadth of support the fellowship, which had its roots in the Gafcon conference in Jerusalem last year, is experiencing. Organisers, who booked Westminster Central Hall for the day-long event, have seen registrations from church leaders flooding in since the launch was announced just two months ago.

In addition to video and personal greetings from international guests including Archbishop Nicholas Okoh, Bishop of Asaba and Archbishop of Bendel, Nigeria, and Archbishop Henri Orombi from Uganda, delegates will also learn of the depth of support and good wishes from English bishops, leaders of both the evangelical and Anglo Catholic wings of Anglicanism.

English Bishops John Broadhurst (Fulham), Wallace Benn (Lewes), John Hind (Chichester) and Michael Nazir-Ali (Rochester) are all billed to speak to the gathering, and Peter Forster (Chester) has sent greetings. Two other diocesan bishops will attend the event. Leading Anglo Catholic Bishop, Keith Ackerman, will lead a main session on how FCA is a catalyst for united mission, ministry and focus for both orthodox Anglicans, be they evangelical or Anglo Catholic.

Bishop Ackerman, who is President of Forward in Faith in the USA, said: "One of the reasons I am really looking forward to being with my friends in England is so that I might be able to share with them the anointing of the Holy Spirit that has occurred at this gathering (of the installation of Archbishop Bob Duncan as Primate of the Anglican Church in North America at Christ Church Plano on June 24) here in Texas.

"Some people say that they really like to stand in line and have a little bit of food from here and there - a smorgasbord - other people like casseroles. At this event the Holy Spirit has brought this meal forward, he has blended together those unique contributions that each of the strains brought and while not losing its integrity is able to put forth that which is well pleasing in his sight and to God be the glory."

"The time is right for us right now not to lose sight of what he is calling his entire Church to. The entire Anglican Communion is being called to stand up and Be Faithful. at this very time. Luke-warmness has gone and we are now ready to talk about the light of the world, Jesus Christ who is ready to ignite the work he has placed before us at this time. I cannot wait to see everyone."

Event spokesman, the Revd Paul Perkin, a vicar from London, added: "Some are staying in the Church, but failing to stand for Christian truth and practice; others are standing firm for Christian truth and practice, but are not staying. We are standing, and we are staying."

The gathering will also hear from a personal video message from veteran evangelical and Anglican statesman, Dr. Jim Packer, before Archbishop Peter Jensen from Australia will give a 30 minute presentation on Why the Jerusalem Statement, agreed at Gafcon in 2008 is central to the fellowship's development across the globe, and in the UK.

Euthanasia - Letter from the Archbishops of Canterbury and Westminster, and the Chief Rabbi....

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, with the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor and the Chief Rabbi, Dr Jonathan Sacks, have jointly written a letter to various newspapers today raising legitimate and fundamental concerns regarding the proposed legislation to protect from prosecution those who assist in the suicides of the terminally ill in the United Kingdom.

It seems to me that there is a danger here of well-intentioned but muddled thinking that can lead to even greater pressure to legalise assisted suicide/Euthanasia. I was talking this over with the CE of a medical charity recently who pointed out that many people who seek this option are doing so three years before they might actually die. That is three years of life, love and relationships curtailed well before they should be.

I particularly applaud the reference to the Hospice Movement in this letter - for that movement has done more for Dignified Tender Loving Care than is ever possible in a busy hospital ward. Yet it is the Hospice Movement that is treated as the Cinderella of our national medical provision when in reality its expansion could remove much of the misguided clamour for legalised Euthanasia.

I do not differentiate between voluntary and involuntary on this matter because the pressure towards this "exit route" is such that the boundaries between them are at best blurred.

The text of the letter:

SIR – Three years ago, a move to legalise physician-assisted suicide was defeated in the House of Lords. The debate on the Bill was heated and impassioned. It was also, by and large, respectful and serious.

Shortly before the Bill was debated in Parliament, the Royal College of Physicians asked its members if they thought the law needed changing. Over 70 per cent of those responding said the law against assisted suicide should stay the same. The Royal College of General Practitioners urged the same.

Now, by way of an amendment to the Coroners and Justice Bill, the legality of assisting people to end their own lives is again to be debated. The amendment seeks to protect from prosecution those who help friends or relatives to go abroad to commit suicide in one of the few countries where the practice is legal.

This would surely put vulnerable people at serious risk, especially sick people who are anxious about the burden their illness may be placing on others. Moreover, our hospice movement, an almost unique gift of this country to wider humankind, is the profound and tangible sign of another and better way to cope with the challenges faced by those who are terminally ill.
This amendment would mark a shift in British law towards legalising euthanasia. We do not believe that such a fundamental change should be sought by way of an amendment to an already complex Bill. It should be rejected.

Surveys....

I understand that a survey of 1000 young people has revealed that about two-thirds of them do not believe in God and that money is more important than God.

Why this should be considered news is beyond me. I guess it plays neatly into thew hands of the British Humanist Association and the National Secular League or whatever they are called. But straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel comes to mind.

The CofE spokesperson rightly says that this has always been the case with young people. Indeed I well remember at Secondary School (some years ago now!) that hardly anyone in my year would have dared own up to such a belief and many seemed to rejoice in pouring scorn on the establishment view etc. That was the days of Pupil Power when we all went on strike - until Mr Wilson came down the corridor and we all fled back to our rooms - strangely, he was the one teacher who never had to resort to corporal punishment. Anyway, I digress - the upshot is that young people have always had doubts about such the beliefs they held as a child. After all learning the truth about a winter visitor does a lot to dampen one's trust in what adults tell you.
But the real issues about this survey are:

Who commissioned it?
Why was it commissioned?
What were the questions?
Were the 1000 young people taken at random or from a representative sample?

What mood were the young people in when they answered the questions (a row with parents that morning can radically alter one's outlook)?

In short this "survey" seems to me to have been a complete waste of time and effort. It tells us nothing that we couldn't have guessed and does nothing to tell us what these young people will believe in five or ten years time.

Given the people that are held up in the press this day as leading interesting lifestyles is there any wonder that this "survey" came up with the results it did. Only last week I was having a coffee in a well-known chain of coffee-shops and the only paper available in the rack was "The Sun" (Comic Cuts). I learnt far more about the supposed bedroom antics of a recently transferred footballer and of a lady who has recently left her husband and was pictured displaying herself for all to wonder at, than I did of any real and lasting significance.

I doubt the newspaper journalists and editors that reported the results of this survey are worried about the result, but they ought to be worried about the diet of dross, filth and slander that they expose our young people to every day.

Guild of the Servants of the Sanctuary (Bucks Chapter) Homily – June 24th (Birth of St John the Baptist) AD 2009....

When I was preparing this homily I was struck by a parish priest’s description of what happened in his parish.

The altar servers at Holy Family Church, are a sight to behold. In their cottas and black cassocks — red for special feasts like Christmas and Pentecost — six carry candles, while others process in with the cross, Sacramentary and incense, thurible and boat. Between 12 and 20 altar servers assist at every Mass, every Sunday. On special feasts, the head count jumps to more than 30. And the most astonishing facet of the scene: All of the altar servers are boys. It’s a sight that must put a smile on the heavenly face of St. John Bosco (1815-1888), the great priest-mentor who promoted the banding together of boys in religious activities.

Well, we might be thinking that was then and things are very different now. But no, that is a description of a Parish Mass happening every Sunday today.

Time was when GSS was a recruiting ground for the priesthood. How many priests have found there vocation while serving at the altar? I would imagine that the answer is far too many to count. For it is at the altar that the boy server sees a priest in action, where he develops a love of the liturgy and the Sacraments, but most importantly he learns that our love for Jesus is expressed in our worship and that this love then flows from the altar into our everyday lives and our work with those around us. Clearly, reverent worship of God the Father through Jesus Christ in the liturgy is a calling card for vocations.

Of course there are other ways in which people assist during the Mass, for Lectors and extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist serve the people. However, the altar boy serves the priest. He’s the hands of the priest. He is a would-be apprentice, either in a real or symbolic way, for the priesthood.

We must also stress what good, attentive and devout serving does for the parish as well as the servers in lifting people’s hearts to God. The cottas, cassocks and reverential ceremony are what the Lord Jesus deserves. This reverence, beauty and example brings people into the reverence and glory of the Mass by having these altar boys not only as servers but as examples.

However, it is also true to say that the altar server should also be formed in the Faith and not simply attend Mass when he is serving. Servers must be prepared to grow in their faith, knowledge and love of the Lord Jesus.

Many of the problems that have beset the CofE of late have been because there has been a tendency to ditch orthodox faith and morals in favour of a culture of relativism. All too often parishes are prepared to accept heretics as their priests – those who do not serve Christ, but promote their own version of the Faith; and lay people have acquiesced and even embraced these strange doctrines not sometimes not even realising that they are not being taught the truth about Christ and His Holy Church.

Eleven and a half years ago the then Rural Dean just before my institution as Incumbent said to me; “Ross it’s good to have with us. You and I are the only Parish Priests in the Deanery who believe in the Resurrection of Christ.” A few years later his successor as Rural Dean said in front of a clergy Chapter that he was fed up of “Credal Statements” and even the archdeacon thought it was funny. There was only one priest present who didn’t think it so funny. I could tell you tale after tale of heresy and the ways in which good, holy, and orthodox priests are being hounded out of the Anglican Communion simply because they will not embrace the nonsense that others are seeking to replace the Christian Faith with.

The time is coming when we will have to decide whether we are going to follow Christ and the “faith once delivered to the saints” or whether we are going to follow the new religion that is being foisted upon us and which, in truth, could not save a fig.

The Guild of the Servants of the Sanctuary has from time to time been affectionately known as “The Guild of the Serpents of the Sanctuary” and unfortunately, in our modern age, with the popularity of Harry Potter that may bring to mind the House of Slytherin. Now none of us, I hope, wish to desert Christ and follow the enemy, but the time is coming when we will no longer be able to trust the whim of the Sorting Hat and we will have to make a decision for ourselves as to where we belong. I am afraid that there are wolves at the door of the sheepfold and worse, some of them appear like shepherds. As St Paul says “even Satan is arrayed as an angel of light.”

Today on this Solemnity of the Birth of St John the Baptist we would do well to recall how, just before his martyrdom, St John sent to Jesus to ask whether he was the Christ or whether they should expect another. The answer Jesus gave clearly indicated that he was the Christ, and that there was no other to be expected. Like St John the Baptist we are not to expect another. Nor are we to expect another, different Gospel than that which has already been given. As John the Baptist leapt in his mother’s womb at the voice of Mary so we must all be attentive to the Lord’s presence. As John the Baptist was faithful to his mission as the one who was to prepare the way for Christ so we must all seek not to advance ourselves, but Christ and his Gospel.

Ultimately, altar servers assist the priest in offering the Sacrifice of the Mass in which the sacrifice of Christ on the altar of the Cross is made present. In so doing the altar server is permitted to draw near to the Sacred Mysteries. These Sacred Mysteries are not to be cheapened, debased or denied in any way. For the Mass is the “Family Service” of the Church – what are deemed “Family Services” are rarely worship in the real sense and many are simply cheap entertainment that is not worship at all. The Sacred Mysteries of the Mass are to be held as holy and undefiled, as pure and unspoilt, as unchanging and always efficacious. The same is true of the faith once delivered to the saints that underpins them. The time is fast approaching when, like Joshua, we will need to decide whom we will serve. Pray God that GSS and all its members like Joshua will declare: “as for me and my house we will serve the Lord.”

Kinda Like A Big Deal

w00t.

Yesterday's Eucharistic Procession....

I am still awaiting photo's from yesterday's Corpus Christi Procession in the Parish, but here are a few from the first one held in 2005 when Bishop Andrew was with us and Monsignor Kevin McGinnell was the celebrant - they can be seen together in the last but one photo.

Some readers may be wondering why this Procession was not held on the Sunday when Corpus Christi is celebrated in England and Wales. The answer is simple: the town was holding its annual "Folk on the Green Festival" which some locals affectionately refer to as the "Waccy Baccy Festival." The Procession would be impossible on that day so we celebrate it a week later.

Glorious weather for this year's procession and a good turn-out from the faithful coupled with a good atmosphere from those who observed the Procession made for an excellent day.

Such events are not without their amusing sides and many a smile was raised when we were singing "repentant publicans are drawing near" as we drew level with a local hostelry!

The Liturgy commences in St Mary & St Giles Church with Exposition, and a Liturgy of the Word. As the Procession is marshalled the faithful are singing "Guide me o thou great Redeemer."

The route we take is from the Parish Church around the town to the Catholic Church. During the Procession there are four Stations with Gospel readings and prayers for specific intentions. Having left the Parish Church the Procession wends its way in a westerly direction to the tree in the Market Square where John Wesley once preached and there holds the First Station. From there we proceed south along Silver Street to the War Memorial on Horsefair Green for the second Station. Next comes the longest unbroken stretch of the Procession from the War Memorial eastward along Horsefair Green and then north along the High Street to the Parish Church's Calvary for the third Station. The Procession then continues to wend its way north along the High Street to the ruins of the ancient St Mary Magdalene's Church (only the tower of which remains for the fourth Station. Hymns have been sung throughout the Procession and First Communicants have been scattering rose petals before the Blessed Sacrament.

After the fourth Station we cross the High Street and enter the Catholic Parish Church of St Mary Magdalene's for Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Much welcome refreshments then follow in the Parish Hall.

As 1940 hits the world is already changing -- The Human Torch is on the run, The Angel makes his masked debut, The Sub-Mariner stalks the surface-worlders who have targeted his people -- and a young soldier named Nick Fury saves a German scientist from the Nazis and leads him to the USA. The battle-lines drawn in this race to create superhuman weapons of mass destruction still reverberate today in the Marvel Universe -- as this epic espionage thriller continues to unfold and reveal new twists!
32 PGS./Rated T+ ...$3.99

Painting the Human Torch on fire is still a challenge. I probably spent as much time on the Torch alone as I did the entire rest of the cover. Below is the rough sketch that was approved, and this time around I followed it pretty much exactly when doing the final painting.

Annual Joint Corpus Christi Procession....

This coming Sunday at 2:00pm the congregations of St Mary & St Giles and the local Roman Catholic Parishes of St Mary Magdalene's and St Francis de Sales will joyfully seek to honour Christ in His Blessed Sacrament.

At 2:00pm we gather in St Mary & St Giles for devotions to the Blessed Sacrament within a Liturgy of the Word. After which we take the Blessed Sacrament in Procession through the main streets of our town stopping at four stations for Gospel Readings and Prayers before reaching St Mary Magdalene's for Benediction.

Everyone is welcome to join us for this wonderful act of witness to Christ which reminds our society that this nations' Christian Culture is one worth celebrating.

Let the Children Live....

On Monday 15th June Fr Peter Walters of the charity "Let the Children Live" has been in the parish. He spoke to the children in our Aided School this morning about his work with the Street Children of Medellin, Columbia where they are regarded as "the disposable ones."

His talk was toned down in content for the children, but sparked off 15 minutes of intense and intelligent questioning from our 9-11 year olds.

This evening Fr Peter spoke in church for the Parish Family and it was good to welcome some of our Roman Catholic friends too. This presentation was far more harrowing than the morning's presentation. Many of our folk left afterwards having been made really aware of just how much pain and suffering is inflicted on children in a forgotten part of the world. Yes there is great need in Africa and parts of Asia, but South America comes last in the queue.
