The real crunch and how it affects ordinary people....

I have just learnt that someone I know is facing the prospect of redundancy after over three decades with the same employer. It seems to me to be beyond belief that someone who has given so many years of hard work and loyalty to an employer can expect to receive only the minimum redundancy pay when fat cats in the city are still likely to get their huge bonuses even though they have got us in this mess.

A priest friend said to me the other week: "Bring back old Labour" - I can begin to understand why he is saying it. Since 1979 successive Governments have tried to build an economy on financial services and retailing - which is, of course, essentially an economy made of straw! We have allowed major companies to be sold to foreign owners with the result that the profits then go abroad. Of course the answer to that will be that it brings employment and investment to our country and yet we are in hock up to our necks and the family silver has been sold - and now there is talk of printing more money!

As usual the little people are paying, while those that have continue to amass more - Bishops please note before you make any more crass comments about us all being materialistic and bringing this on ourselves . Can you imagine how this family will feel if on Sunday I stood up and preached about the recession and how our materialistic natures had got us in this mess? The last thing ordinary people need is people who live in quite expensive tied housing trying to make them feel guilty about what they have in their homes. What they need is compassion and hope, along with competent politicians and sound fiscal practices.
