Rare Magazine Interviews with MC Shan, DJ Cash Money & Doug E. Fresh with The Kool Skool's Shucks One + Walt "Clyde" Frazier with Paul McKenzie

MC Shan Rocking Dapper Dan Puma Suit, "Shirt King" Portrait Sweat Shirt, Gold caps, Fade & shape-up parting. Can you get more fresh in 88'?!

"For those of you who are unfamiliar with my history, I have interviewed over 200 Hip-Hop artists, B-Boys, DJs, MCs, Graffiti Writers, Producers, and Film Makers over the years, for Film, Radio, Magazines and Magazine features. After being told I "knew too much about Hip-Hop to be a writer for Touch Magazine" which described itself as "The Original UK Urban Music Magazine"????!!! In 2005 I was asked by the same Touch Magazine, to interview 3 of really influential Hip-Hop Legends in one afternoon!!! It was one of the highlights of my "Career" as a Hip-Hop Journalist (whatever that means).

I had the chance to meet their manager Grand Imperial Arkim, better known as one of the first rappers from Queensbridge, on Vinyl. Arkim was famous for his songs with Legendary Queens DJ Hot Day, he broke down some Queensbridge Rap history for me. It was a really good day, hearing MC Shan one of the funniest guys in Hip-Hop joking around with and Basketball Legend Walt "Clyde" Frazier Superstartar Pro Baller over lunch, about (his classic signature shoe Puma Clyde's aka States). "Yo how in the hell did you play Ball in them dude. I can't believe you never broke your ankle just walking in them???!" Good times, I will be editing them and many more for broadcast on The UK's Best Hip-Hop Radio station www.Sensei.fm soon!" - The Kool Skool's Shucks One ID UZN

DJ Cash Money Interview By Shucks One
Cash Money is my favourite DJ, the first Turntablists DJ I ever really saw (yes on Night Network), and I had lots of questions for him. He broke down the Phillie Hip-Hop scene and in particular, the DJ's role in that, influential Radio personality Angie B, his winning of the New Music Semenar, Sleeping Bag Records, and modern DJs. A real honour

MC Shan Interview By Shucks One
MC Shan is one of the funniest don't give a fuck MCs I have ever met, he talked about Beefing with Hill Top Hustlers (Steady B/Cool C etc), LL Cool J, BDP and anyone else, Marley Marl's "lost and found" Bridge is over Reel. The interview was over an hour long so there was A LOT that didn't go in the mag. Watch this space for the entire interviews in audio format!!!

Doug E. Fresh Interview by Shucks One
Doug E. Fresh is one of the coolest and positive guys out there, he told me about the history of his "Get Fresh Crew", his many Community works, 1/2 Trini, 1/2 Bajan heritage, again proving the Caribbean elements of Foundation Hip-Hop Culture and more.

The Interviews featured in Touch Magazine November 2005 (practically took me until 2008 to get paid hahaha!)

Going Straight Up - Hot Day ft. Arkim, (MC Cor) Cormega and Shahid (OLD SCHOOL QUEENSBRIDGE)
Album cut from DJ Hot Day's 1989 album "It's My Turn" on Tuff City records. This was Cormega's first official song, performing as MC Cor.

Tuff City Rockin'!

Everyone knows that The Kool Skool is the home of Tuff City Records, so its only right that we fill you in on all the new releases from our favourite imprint!!!

The 45 King's the 900 Number: the 20th Anniversary Project
45 King

Ol' Skool Flava LP 4040 Price: $7.95
Cover by Joey Vega (Kool Skool interview coming soon...)

Classic DJ Tool The 900 Number is being Re-issued, any DJ who doesn't have this is not one...
"Twenty Years later, Tuff City Records is proud to announce a 20th Anniversary Tribute album to the 45 King, the man who may have ushered in the age of sample based production, and his iconic song. Featuring remixes by from artists across the spectrum, and new versions from Latee (his first recording in perhaps fifteen years) and Chill Rob G, the record is a celebration of Mark’s contribution to music history."
Latee is better known for his smooth flow on his track "The King Is Here" (1988), and being the 45 Kings brother, and of course Chill Rob G for the ORIGINAL "I got The Power", and "This Court Is Now In Session" and many others.

Grandmaster Caz
Ol' Skool Flava LP 4031 Price: $7.95

Cover art by Phase2

The Cold Crush Brother's Caz is the MC all of the Golden Era Rappers wanted to be, from DMC to LL and Busta Rhymes, his influence is evident. This album is a serious slice of old school battle rhymes and with early production by Marley Marl and Ced Gee (Ultramagnetic), and the in house Drummer/producer from the Sugar Hill Record Label Pumkin, you will not be disappointed...
"Ol’ Skool Flava presents GRANDMASTER CAZ’s “YOU NEED STITCHES: The Tuff City Sessions,” which is the first ever collection of his solo productions. This album includes the previously unreleased “Ain’t Takin’ No Shorts” and “Caz Is Goin Off” as well as productions Ced Gee and Pumkin."

The Ol' Skool Flava of…Delmar International
Various Artists
Ol' Skool Flava LP 4037 Price: $7.95

We know about the track "When You're Standing On the Top" by The Super Three, but on the other dusty finds on this 4 track EP we are not afraid to say when we don't!!! We pride ourselves on keeping the Disco Rap alive at the Kool Skool, so you know we will be playing this to DEF!!!
"Tuff City Records has turned to the very origins of recorded hip-hop for the newest release on their Ol’ Skool Flava Imprint: the Ol’ Skool Flava of Delmar International (OSF LP 4037). The issue focuses on some of the first ever recorded hip-hop songs, produced by Harlem legend Delmar Donnell. We all know of the equally excellent and rare track by Super Three, “Philosophy Rappin Spree” – but Tuff City has done one better. Available for the first time, here, there or anywhere, the release features the bass and drum heavy REMIX of “Philosophy Rappin’ Spree,” an eleven minute sprint of lyrics, hard beats and large hall reverb. The sound is better than ever, as Tuff City Records unearthed a lone master tape of the session. The release is rounded out by the Super 3’s “When You’re Standing on the Top,” Spyder D’s “Spinning Webs and Rapping Rhymes” and Community People’s “Education Wrap,” a very early example of positive message rap. All of these songs feature Delmar Donnell’s exquisite production and his legendary studio band."

"They made a video for that?!!!!" Part 1

DJ Fingers of the Sindecut was talking the other day about how in the UK it was impossible to see Hip Hop videos in the old days. In the early 90's in New York they had "old school videos" on Video Music Box, and how for me it was always like "they made a video for that?!!!" So here are a few you might have missed too.

Marley Marl ft. Juice Crew - The Symphony II
(Master Ace, Craig G, Big Daddy Kane, Little Daddy Shane, Kool G. Rap, )
(The 12" mix is much better and Little Daddy Shane (B.D. Kane's little Brother) should have NOT been on this. Supposedly Kool G. Rap rapped until the tape ran out, the original version was about 15 mins long, although it could have been the Symphony 1...)

The D.O.C. - The Formula (Official Video)
(Texan rapper D.O.C. over cheesy Dre keyboardzzz. The intro is hilarious, "Go Malik, Go Malik Go!!!" Obvious dis against MC Hammer, there were alot of MCs dissing him in videos back then, 3rd Bass, Run DMC, De La Soul etc.)

Joe Ski Love - Peewee's Dance
(Ahhhh songs about dance crazes!!! Ice-t doing the Peewee at 2:42)

Boogie Boys - You Ain't Fresh
(Kid Delight R.I.P.)

Lakim Shabazz - Need Some Lovin'
(New Jersey 5%er Lak drops knowledge on positive track from his 2nd album)

Breeze - LA Posse
(Another LA emigre was hot in the L.A. scene in the N.W.A saturated late 90's)

Biz Markie - This is Something for the Radio
(Dance step classic, "yo Biz where's the raps????")

Gang Starr - Step in the Arena
(Step In The Arena is definately in my top 10 albums ever, Little Dap in the chains. Premier with the mellow cuts)
