Crossgen: Resurrected
Broken Frontier has recently released the latest copy of their e-magazine The Frontiersman featuring a cover story on Marvel's recent announcement about the return of Crossgen properties. The article includes a creator roundtable discussion with several former Crossgen creators including Chuck Dixon, Ron Marz, Jim Cheung, Greg Land, and myself among others. Also inside - two unpublished El Cazador covers that I drew for issues 7 and 8.
The Frontiersman #10 is now available for download at brokenfrontier.com or at the iTunes store for the iPad.
EDitorial: Why all the new hires on SNL? And who might get the cut.
So Lorne just hired three new performers and a batch of new writers as Will Forte leaves SNL (voluntarily) and some writers leave as well.
And this helps prove my theory correct. Assuming Lorne isn't announcing any cuts this season, then Lorne is expecting an exodus (whether natural or prodded on). This makes sense, seeing how last season we had three featured players, and the other 8 performers (Kristen, Bill, Jason, Andy, Kenan, Fred, Seth, & Will) are now approaching at least 6 years (this is Seth's 10th season and Fred's 9th). So what that typically means is that Lorne has to be ready so that he doesn't repeat the 1979 travesty (that is where all his last performers gave in their final season, and the next season Lorne tried to scramble together the writers to be performers, the audience didn't care as much and Lorne got replaced; Lorne came back with a vengeance in 1985).
And what "ready" means is that he needs other performers out there that the audience likes, so that if his four big stars left in the same season, he still has a good show. Makes sense. He did the same thing in 2005 by bringing in Jason, Andy, Bill, and Kristen (all were huge hits). Of course that gave him 16 players!!! Wow, talk about fighting for air time!
The down-side of this strategy is that if he doesn't get an exodus, and the new guys rock and roll (like they did in 2005), then he has to do what he did in the 2006-2007 season... let some of his older players go (Sanz, Parnell, and Finesse Mitchell). And then that season Fey and Dratch also left. So between a 2-person exodus and letting three people go (I agree with all three cuts and I don't think Dratch added enough), he was left 11 cast members (and no featured players) in the 2006-2007 season.
(In fact, that's why there are reruns and specials during the SNL season... because the studio told Lorne that he has to cut more cast or cut episodes... so he's choosing to keep as many cast members as he can.)
So... here is my prediction about how it's going to go down...
This season, Abby, Bobby, Nasim, and these new players really prove themselves. I mean check out the Scrubs Interns episode with Taran Killam. He stole that show. If SNL didn't pick him up, someone would have handed him his own sitcom after something like that. The webisode was almost like an audition to SNL, what with the impressions, the touchy-feely shtick, and the dance off (not to mention the awkwardness on camera that he faked). Plus the dude has been on Scrubs, MadTV, and he used to be in the Groundlings (like Will Ferrell and others).
If the other two can pull off humor like that then we've got a new future for SNL. ...And a potential repeat of 2006 on SNL (where Lorne is going to hope for an exodus or else he has to cut a few off).
Last season, there were 12 players on SNL, and now they're adding an additional 3. Subtract Will Forte (who recently announced that he's choosing to leave), and we're left with 14 players.
Next year, the 2011-2012 season, if no one leaves, then Lorne might have to let someone go.
Kenan Thompson is entering his 8th season right now, Fred Armisen: his 9th, and Seth Meyers: his 10th. This is Jason Sudeikis' 7th, and 6th for Bill Hader, Andy Samberg, and Kristen Wiig.
So Kristen Wiig has a chance to break out in films with her Bridesmaids film (and she's been supporting in dozens of films, so she has what it takes), Jason Sudeikis has been a late bloomer, but he's been on 30 Rock 12 times now, Cleveland Show 19 times, a larger part in Bounty Hunter, and he's got a great lineup of films coming, including a starring role that could break him out. And I think while Lorne is in no hurry to lose Andy Samberg, The Lonely Island would merely have to say to Lorne, "We want you to produce our show," and then BAM - Andy's gone and on his own show.
And then Fred Armisen might leave SNL simply because he knows that he should leave before he gets cut in order to save some face. (I could see Fred supporting on a sitcom, but he couldn't lead a film.)
Meanwhile Bill Hader is racking up the supporting roles, but he's failing to line up a potential break-out role (not sure why he didn't muster some momentum from his awesome Super Bad performance opposite Seth Rogen to pitch Seth a buddy comedy).
Kenan Thompson continues supporting roles (he's Greedy in Smurfs), but he's already had his chance to star in films twice, so he probably knows that supporting film roles and SNL are as good as it gets for him (unless he can land a supporting role on a sitcom).
I see Seth Meyers sticking it out on SNL until he's given a high-profile talk show gig. With the NBC debaucle, Lorne probably couldn't get him one, so Seth would probably need to land it on his own and not on NBC. Lorne has no reason to cut him since he's popular and only on Weekend Update.
So these are the people who might leave because they're pursuing TV, film, or saving face, in order of how likely I think they are to leave after the 2010-2011 season...
1. Kristen Wiig (to a sitcom or films)
2. Jason Sudeikis (to a sitcom or films)
3. Andy Samberg (to his own skit show with TLI or doing music full-time)
4. Fred Armisen (to save face and pursue smaller projects, like Will Forte just did)
And then here are the cuts that I see likely if Lorne is forced to let someone go (listed in order; note that I love these people and think they're hilarious, so don't get me wrong; it's more about the business of it):
1. Fred Armisen (his Obama impression is his insurance, but it won't last forever)
2. Kenan Thompson (being the only black cast member is his insurance, but it won't last forever)
3. Jenny Slate (if she makes it to this coming season, she will probably be the female cast member with the most to prove, especially because Vanessa Bayer looks spunky, fresh, and super creative)
I don't think Lorne will let these people go that I'm listing below (in order of how valuable they are to him):
1. Kristen Wiig (come on; she's the Eddie Murphy of the female cast)
2. Andy Samberg (the dude put YouTube on the map, his fan base is through the roof, his record(s) sell, and he seems to get nominated for an Emmy (or Grammy) every year; if Lorne was thinking of letting him go, he'd just drop Andy down to the Digital Shorts only before he'd ever let Andy go)
3. Bobby Moynihan, Abby Elliott, and Nasim Pedrad (Lorne needs fresh blood and a future to SNL, and these are them)
4. Jason Sudeikis (Jason is a do-all straight man and very charming; with Will Forte out of the picture, Jason needs to be there to fill that role)
5. Bill Hader (Bill has some great impressions, a huge fan base, and he's also a do-all actor; plus he hasn't been around as long as Fred and Kenan)
6. Seth Meyers (he's been around forever, but he's only on Weekend Update and he's still super popular; the only reason to let him go is if a producer wanted to move on because they didn't like him as the head writer or something)
So again, it falls on Fred Armisen, Kenan Thompson, and Jenny Slate as the most likely candidates to get cut (if the need arose).
What do you think?

The Kool Skool Interviews Tame One - Boom Skwad (Ex-Artifacts)
The Kool Skool Interviews Tame One Boom Skwad (Ex-Artifacts)
Despite the long history of quality underground artists, it took Redman's 1990 collabo with EPMD, for New Jersey to get some serious love out of the Tri-state. MC, DJ and Graffiti writer Tame One's a New Jersey representer all the way, who's been getting up, and throwing down for some time, just across the river from the Big Apple.
The Artifacts (originally The Brick City Kids) Press shot
In 1994 alongside El Da Sensei, their group The Artifacts (originally The Brick City Kids) slotted smoothly into the weed headed, Timbo-clad "keep it real" era. Punters were getting tired of the shouty chorus based tracks of that time, and the brothers from New Jeruse brought the skills, art and elements back. Artifacts became part of new generation of real East Coast hood MC's getting their shine on.
Wrong Side Of The Tracks single cover
Their first single Wrong Side Of The Tracks can be considered a bonified classic not just because it was a heavy track but for several reasons:
1. It was one of the first proper Graff based records; an element long ignored by the MC population.
2. It became a Graf writers anthem, who in turn showed the group love.
3. The cover featured a slick mock up of Artifacts train piece by New York writer Reas [AOK], and started the rumour mill going… "Did Artifacts do it?!" "Can they paint as well as they rap?!"
4. The Artifacts tore down the now legendary 1995 Rock Steady Crew Anniversary Jam, gaining them serious true school respect.
Their first album, "Between A Rock And A Hard Place" (1994) was on Big Beat Records, (also home to New Jersey group Double X Posse). Another single of the album "Come On Wit Da Git Down" also featured a Busta Rhymes appearance on the remix, I imagine a pretty pricey guest now.
The Artifacts "That's Them"
The Facts second album "That's Them" followed in 1997, and the [DITC's] Show Biz blessed them with Remix club smasher "The Ultimate", a standard in any mix set of that era. The two parted ways after, and Tame continued on the long haul alone, and what with some of the recent not so subliminal dissing, a re-united album looks highly unlikely.
A series of releases on the High & Mighty's independent imprint Eastern Conference Records, solo LP's "When Rappers Attack", and a collaboration with Cage for the Leak Brothers project "Waterworld." Tame also ripped a sick verse along side J-Zone, Cage, Mr. Eon [High & Mighty] Mad Skillz and others on the 2001 Posse cut "Eastern Conference All Stars."
Tame One "O.G. Bobby Johnson"
2005 brought the DOPE "O.G. Bobby Johnson" solo album, an over-looked gem, and really defines the versatility that can be achieved by a real MC, and an open mind. This year, Ahead Records released a new "Spazmatic" solo but strength in numbers is now his modern mantra, as he puts in work as a member of the Weathermen, and Slow Suicide Stimulus (with the Dusted Dons) for several recent and upcoming projects and tours.
MC skills are not the only thing he is known for, getting live on the decks, dope handstyles and pieces got him rockin' with some of the best graffiti crews New York has ever seen, FC, TC5, and [like Kool Sphere] he's CWK too. To continue our mission to support the real art, we copped a few with the Knotty Headed Terrorist, and mixed it up on his favourite elements.
Tame One Piece
What do you write and what crews are you connected to?
Tameone, LTD, NRG, FC, TC5, QM8, CBS, CWK and the Boom Skwad.
What area are you from and when did you start writing?
Newark, New Jersey, [and I started in] 1980.
Who was the first writer that got you interested in graff?
2 Nastie Nas a.k.a. Jerry Jinx, out of Newark, NJ.
For people who don't know that much about the New Jersey scene, what was it like back in the day?
It was real competitive for "choice spots" to have your work seen. North Jerz (Essex County) had its spurts of activity, it seemed as if every other summer, another duo would start a new crew, and team up to bomb all city, only to be replaced by a newer duo from another neighbourhood. There was more emphasis on actual piecing back in the late '80's - early '90's, as compared to nowadays, more tagging and throw-ups are being done.
Were New Jersey writers accepted by the New Yorkers?
Yeah, the ones with either skills, the balls to hang out in NY, or the ones willing to play "your guide" for NY cats looking for new areas to bomb, rack paint from, or get drugs from cheaper.
Did a lot of Freights get done?
Not by me, I hate Freights, only because after you're done painting, the chances of ever seeing your piece again are slim to none.
What would you say is "the Tame One style"?
Readable with a distinct flavour, the original Bronx-style.
Are there any memories that stick out from back then?
Freshman year of Arts High School, I bombed the school so hard. I single-handedly caused the banning of the marker as a medium, for any artists from 9th grade through 12th!!!
You're down with a lot of serious crews, what do you feel are the benefits?
To be able to create with similar minded artists I respect and/or admire.
Do you feel that graffiti has changed?
Paint colours are more vibrant now, and artists push the envelope, experimenting with wilder styles (depending on their location).
Has being a writer as well as an MC changed your life in any particular way?
It has influenced me socially, in relationships with dealing with groups of friends or crews, as well as rivals.
Black Book Mathematics
What do you feel you get from doing graff?
Self-expression, self-gratification, and disregard for the socially accepted, and as further inspiration for personal self-expression in general. I record for fame. I do graffiti for me.
How did you first get introduced to the music industry?
Pursuing and then obtaining a recording deal in 1993.
Can you name some of the artists you have worked with in the past?
Redman, Busta Rhymes, George Clinton [Parliament], [and graff writers] Gnome CWK [designed covers for T La Rock & Just-ice] and West FC. [I toured with] The Beatnuts, Organized Konfusion and Common.
Who were the coolest MC's/DJ's that you met back then?
DJ Rockraider, DJ Sinister, Hard To Obtain, Busta Rhymes, Kurious, Cage, Lord Finesse and Brand Nubian.
What would you say has your best show?
Just to irritate you, I'm going to say I haven't done my best show yet. [Career wise] I still haven't made it yet. I'm still grinding!!!
Tame One T-shirt design
As an artist do you design your own record covers as well?
I don't do the album covers; I leave that up to other members of my crew Boom Skwad. But [I like] the "Tame1 tag" on my merchandise (t-shirts etc), because it's my actual graffiti tag worn as a "moving canvas".
Are you bringing any new music coming out soon?
Probably not until winter '06, but until then [I'll do] a few mix CD appearances or collabos.
Is there anything you would like to plug?
My Boom Skwad Crew, Slow Suicide Stimulus, The "Weathermen" and Division East Clothing Line.
Tame One's website

SNL News: 3 New Performers
It seems that those writers SNL hired were performers who might not have made the cut to perform on SNL (maybe they auditioned or Lorne just liked their material). However, SNL still offered them jobs as writers, and, because they have common sense, they took the gigs. That said, in the rounds that Lorne and Kristen Wiig have been making (and probably others), SNL did select three new performers to replace Will Forte. More of my opinions after the news story...
Three comedians — Paul Brittain, Vanessa Bayer, and Taran Killam — are rumored to join the cast of Saturday Night Live for its 36th season.
According to The Comic’s Comic, Brittain is a Chicago-based improviser and sketch comedian, Bayer is a Cleveland native who also performs throughout Chicago, and Killam has been on-air with MADtv and Nick Cannon’s Wild ‘N Out.
FYI: Yesterday, it was announced that Will Forte decided to call it quits after eight seasons on SNL.
Here are video clips of Bayer and Killam…

Taran Killam: Scrubs Interns - Webisode 5

So Killam is more of a progressive step, since he's already been doing his comedy on TV for awhile (similar to how Amy Poehler and Kenan Thompson both were doing comedy on other shows before SNL). (I'm actually surprised Killam would take this gig, because he would probably be offered his own sitcom otherwise.) And Bayer and Brittain are more of the "finds." So we'll continue to check these three out and let you know what we think.
Brittain and Bayer were both confirmed through their improv organization, the Improv Olympics. Taran has not yet been confirmed through a direct source (SNL, The Groundlings, or Killam).
If you find more videos of these three in action, send them our way!
What do you think about these three?
Thanks, and...
Enjoy!
